DVDpedia Front Row Plug-in (v. 2.0.2)
This DVDpedia plug-in for Front Row, written by Mathieu Guindon, is the ultimate home theater addition - see your DVDpedia database in Front row and watch linked movies. Now also includes AppleTV support!
You can browse your movies by Title, Director, Actor, Genre, Year, Country or Recently Added. You will also get a little info for each entry selected. And if you have a movie linked to the entry, you can start playing it right there in Front Row!
Any comments, questions or suggestions for future versions of the plug-in can be posted in this thread in our forum. Please note that this plug-in requires OS X 10.5 Leopard.
What's new in version 2.0.2:
- AppleTV support
- Collection browsing
- bug fix version 2.0.1 - collection order is now kept the same as in DVDpedia
- bug fix version 2.0.2 - plug-in now works on PPC as well as Intel Macs
How to install the plug-in on AppleTV:
1 - Update your AppleTV to 2.1
2 - You will need to enable at least SSH and AFP on the AppleTV. This is the hardest part, but there is a lot of information about this everywhere. You can follow instructions from iclarified.com and then install NitoTV. In NitoTV you will be able to run the Smart Installer which will install lots of useful things like AFP and external USB drive support. If you choose to follow any other instructions, please be aware that at this point the Take2USB patch doesn’t work with AppleTV 2.1. The patch applied with NitoTV smart installer works. Also, you have to know that even with all the patches, since AppleTV take 2, VIDEO_TS folders will not playback.
If you need help patching your AppleTV, head to the AwkwardTV community. They will be able to tell you much more concerning this step.
3 - Using the Finder or SSH, copy the plug-in from /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/PlugIns/DVDpedia.frappliance/ to the AppleTV in /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/.
Note: To get into Front Row.app and Finder.app just ctrl-click (right-click) the icon and select "Show Package Contents".
Note2: If you cannot see the AppleTV from the Finder, choose "Connect to Server" (Command-K) and enter afp://appletv.local
4 - Now you need to put the DVDpedia database somewhere accessible from the AppleTV. By default, the plug-in will look on the AppleTV in /Users/frontrow/. So, using the Finder or SSH, copy the folder ~/Library/Application Support/DVDpedia/ to AppleTV in /Users/frontrow/. You can also put the database elsewhere; the DVDpedia database location is configurable in the setting menu of the plug-in.
5 - Reboot your AppleTV by unplugging it or logging in to the AppleTV with SSH and killing the Finder process.
6 - Now you can open the database with DVDpedia at this new location. Start the application while holding down the Option key and DVDpedia will let you select the database location. Choose AppleTV /Users/frontrow/DVDpedia/ or any location you chose on step 4.
