CDPedia ignores USB Camera

Postby daniel_m » Tue May 12, 2020 4:44 am

CDPedia stopped using my external Logitech Camera to add Albums to my collection. This was working perfectly until today.
Photo Boot and Face Time are both set to use the external Camera and there is no issue with them, but they have a camera selector....

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

What version of CDpedia are you using ? Also what macOS version are you using ?

Also please check with the Logitech website that you are using the latest software drivers for your camera. And though this is obvious check the camera with another program and all its leads and connections. Back to basics I know but sometimes it is the obvious that we miss.

There are new beta's available as of yesterday please give them are go, they are perfectly safe to use.

https://bruji.com/beta/dvdpedia.zip
https://bruji.com/beta/bookpedia.zip
https://bruji.com/beta/cdpedia.zip
https://bruji.com/beta/gamepedia.zip

Also there are some hidden menu tasks that you can perform: 'hold down the option key and click on the main Help menu in each program once and select - each in turn: 'Verify Database', 'Remove Orphaned Covers' and 'Clean Duplicates in Fields' these may not solve your problems but it wont hurt either.

There is also one other thing you can do and that is to use, what I call a "Grease & Oil Change" maintenance program called Onyx. This is a FREE program that is a multifunction utility that you can use to verify the structure of the system files, to run miscellaneous maintenance and cleaning tasks, to configure parameters in the Finder, Dock, Safari, and some of Apple's applications, to delete caches, to remove certain problematic folders and files, to rebuild various databases and indexes, and more. I always use it prior and post system OS updates and about once a month.

This program is available here: Titanium Software - Onyx. ONLY DOWNLOAD THE VERSION FOR YOUR macOS

I am using the Version 6.0.1 of Cdpedia on OSX Version 10.14.6 (18G4032)

There is no driver required for the camera as I mentioned the camera works fine with Skype, FaceTime and Photo Booth.

I scanned around 400 albums last weekend without any issue and I think there was a crash at the end.
I have some diagnostic reports if this would help.

Maybe a clean reinstall is required, is there a way to remove Cdpedia completely?

Please update to the latest version of CDpedia beta. As I said previously they are safe to use.
Also if your Mac will take it upgrade to to macOS 10.15.4 Catalina. The latest versions of the pedia's have been optimised to run with Catalina. The reason for this is that Catalina will only run 64bit apps not 32bit apps. Though your version of CDpedia will run, it is not FULLY optimised.

1 - Try out Onyx from: Titanium Software - Onyx. ONLY DOWNLOAD THE VERSION FOR YOUR macOS

2 - If still problems then uninstall CDpedia except for your database. To achieve this I use a FREE program called AppCleaner which you can download from here. On using this App place a check mark IN ALL the boxes EXCEPT: ~/Library/Application Support/CDpedia, which is the second line down from the top. This is where your data base is located. Ensure that is NOT ticked. You will loose your Preference settings though but they only take a couple of minutes to redo. ONLY DOWNLOAD THE VERSION FOR YOUR macOS

3 - Now download and install the latest CDpedia 6.0.2 beta 162 https://bruji.com/beta/cdpedia.zip

4 - I advise that you upgrade to macOS 10.15.4 Catalina via System Preferences > Software update

I know some of these measures sound drastic but so long as you also run a backup regime there should be no worries.

QUESTION: did your Logitech camera download and install software in the background. I would still check the LogiTech website for the latest software drivers.
Yes your Logitech is still working with Skype and FaceTime but with the pedia's it has been optimised to read barcodes and this has always been a mild coding problem.

I hope these points are helpful in some way.

I installed CDpedia using the suggested AppCleaner and re-installed the latest Beta version.

Unfortunately Cdpedia still uses the build in Camera instead of external one. The external one is the default when opening Face Time or Photo Booth. But both apps have a camera selection menu...

CDpedia worked perfectly until 2 weeks. Maybe the 10.14.6 update has something to do with it...

I just suddenly remembered something - Doh  My only excuse is it has been a while, years, since I needed to use a 3rd party camera in the pedia's.

To set up your preferred camera you need to hold down the Control (Ctrl) key whilst clicking on the iSight button in the search panel. This should bring up a request dialogue box to choose either your Logitech camera or iSight camera. Your choice here will be remembered for the future. If you want to change your camera choice again, just hold down the Control (Ctrl) key again whilst clicking on the iSight button in the search panel. Ensure you fully Quit then fire up the pedia before each change in camera choice. You may have lost this original remembered setting during an update.

Also check the following in: System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Camera (left column) CDpedia might be listed in the right column, if so, ensure there is a Tick against it. You may have to unlock to make changes by clicking on the Padlock bottom left > system credentials > then Tick the box next to CDpedia.

If CDpedia is not listed leave System Preferences open and fire up CDpedia and then click on the Add icon then the iSight button in the Search box. CDpedia should now appear in the System Prefences panel already Ticked.

PS: can you please supply us with the EXACT Logitech Camera model you are using.
thanks

I checked that CDpedia is checked and everything looks fine

System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Camera:
(tick) CDpedia Beta.app

System Information > Camera:
Code: Select all
HD Pro Webcam C920:

Model ID:   UVC Camera VendorID_1133 ProductID_2093
  Unique ID:   0x1400000046d082d

FaceTime HD Camera:

Model ID:   UVC Camera VendorID_1452 ProductID_34304
  Unique ID:   0x1420000005ac8600

I will scan the rest of my cd's with the build in camera, that's not really a big issue for me.
Was just really strange that it suddenly switched camera.

EDIT:
just restarted CDpedia to continue scanning and I selected the Logitech Camera and freezes

Console output:

Force quit CDpedia
Restart CDpedia
scanning from Logitech Camera works

seems that CDpedia uses the first available camera, could this be?
AFAIR the order in System Information was the other way around yesterday...

When you Control (Ctrl) key whilst clicking on the iSight button in the search panel did that panel give you the choice of "FacTime HD Camera (built-in)" plus your "HD Pro Webcam C920" ?

The pedia takes the nomenclature straight from System Information > Camera.

If still having problems delete the cache belonging to CDpedia: (don't worry it will automatically be recreated)
~Library/Caches/com.bruji.cdpedia

Also, as I previously mentioned, do run Onyx from Titanium Software. ONLY DOWNLOAD THE VERSION FOR YOUR macOS
I let it run (Tick all the boxes) ALL the Maintenance tasks EXCEPT Options Bookmark Icons.

There is new LogiTech software available for your webcam:

Software Version: 2.0.200
Last Update: 2020-02-11
OS: macOS 10.15.x, macOS 10.14.x
File Size: 87 MB

But LogiTech is also very compliant with the international UVC (USB video class) software to enable it to run generically on macOS hence why it is working with Skype and FaceTime.

But after carrying out some research some people, software developers etc, have experienced problems with macOS10.14 Mojave and UVC complaint cameras outside of macOS and MS Windows OS. This is one reason to always try and run the latest version of any and all software including Operating Systems.

Ok, for further testing I switched the camera in Photo Booth and FaceTime to the internal camera, unplugged the Logitech camera and restarted the computer.

The order in System Information is now the other way around.

Code: Select all
FaceTime HD Camera:

Model ID:   UVC Camera VendorID_1452 ProductID_34304
  Unique ID:   0x1420000005ac8600

HD Pro Webcam C920:

Model ID:   UVC Camera VendorID_1133 ProductID_2093
  Unique ID:   0x14530000046d082d

CDpedia now uses the FaceTine camera for scanning....

I must not have read your last post completely as I missed this point
FineWine wrote:When you Control (Ctrl) key whilst clicking on the iSight button in the search panel did that panel give you the choice of "FacTime HD Camera (built-in)" plus your "HD Pro Webcam C920" ?

This in fact works and shows a camera selector, quite interesting that this is not something that can be selected in preferences.
And I didn't really search in the CDpedia Help for this and I might have found it in the 'Tips & Tricks for working with CDpedia' section if I had...

I forgot to mention that I did a clean with Onyx and I installed the Camera Settings App from Logitech (v3.0.12)

I am usually up to date with everything on my Mac, I use MacUpdater to keep me up to date.

Thank's for helping sorting this out

Here is the Help notes re adding entries using the iSight or 3rd party webcam:
Adding albums > Adding entries > using a webcam > Adding entries with an iSight or webcam

daniel_m wrote:I am usually up to date with everything on my Mac, I use MacUpdater to keep me up to date.

I would not trust MacUpdater at all. It has a history of redirecting legitimate links to malware links. Firefox, Onyx from Titanium Software have all been caught out. Yes these links update your software but they are also loaded with payloads of; malware, ransomware, cryptocurrency, adware and just pure nasties. As much as they might scream foul and it is not their fault, do not trust them. Besides they themselves are charging for a supposed service that you can do for free.

It is far safer for you to either use the app's own in-build updater or go direct to app's home website, usually via the Help Menu or the Apple App Store.

Run Malwarebyes from Malwarebytes Labs and see what sort of nasties you might have. I used to have the free version installed because I was trying out a lot of software that was not from the Apple App store. But now that I don't do that anymore I uninstalled it.

Did a full scan with the malware scanner no infections detected, also I use the MacUpdater app not MAcUpdate Desktop or links on macupdate.com..

Anyway, CDpedia beta crashes quite often opening the iSight camera window.

Catalina was update today to 10.15.5 and one of the fixes was:

Resolves an issue where the built-in camera may not be detected when trying to use it after using a video conferencing app

I know you are running 10.14.6 but Conor might be interested in this.
